I have been working as a licensed therapist since 2004. The environment I offer is safe, warm, and respectful where clients may explore their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and fears. I strive to build a trusting relationship where we may work collaboratively to develop more effective coping strategies and, by extension, self-esteem.

My goal is to work together with you to develop self-understanding, flexibility, resilience, strength, functionality, and mastery over your life.

If you suffer in silence from debilitating fears and phobias. If your fear, your phobia is holding you back from living your life. If you avoid facing your phobia and feel hampered or defeated by it. If you feel sad, frustrated, even angry at yourself. You've tried to reason your way out of your phobia without success. I can offer you help in conquering or neutralizing your fears and anxieties.

Couples Therapy

Do you and your partner or spouse seem to be fighting constantly over trivial matters without resolution? Are you feeling lonely even though you are in a relationship? Do you feel that your relationship has deteriorated since having children? Are your conflicts negatively affecting others you care about? Is your intimacy diminished? Has there been an affair? Are you contemplating leaving?

My mission is to help committed couples come to understand the issues with which they are struggling and help them create a sustainable and enjoyable system that will continue to improve once the counseling process is complete.

It takes awareness and courage to seek out couples counseling. You are choosing to cultivate a more delightful and healthy relationship. By using Gottman therapy interventions, I expect to help you better understand and communicate your feelings, re-build the friendship you once had, come to nurture fondness and admiration for each other, de-escalate and repair during conflicts, have more constructive conflicts, and attain a more positive perspective of each other.

General Couples Counseling Approach
  1. Introduction and Assessment (homework assignments given) 75-80 min.
  2. Individual Assessments – one session per individual (55-minute session).
  3. Couple Treatment Planning (identification of challenges through assessments and integration with each partner’s individual concerns).
  4. Check-in, Psycho-Education, and Interventions
  5. Clarification of Future Concerns and Goals.
  6. Closure.
  7. 3-month, 6-month, and 12 month check-ins.
Research shows that couples create more sustainable changes through couples counseling with 80 minute sessions than with 50 minute sessions.  Therefore most sessions will be 80 minutes to allow maximum benefit.

Individual Therapy

As a solution-focused therapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a more fulfilling life. While we cannot alter difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life while working around your enduring vulnerabilities. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, with respect and sensitivity, we will clarify long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. I may employ the EMDR approach to therapy to help you reprocess old disturbing memories that influence your current emotions, physical sensations, and thoughts/beliefs that may contribute to your current distress or sense of unfulfilledness.

Are you one of the many who suffer from Panic Disorder? Do you fear doing everyday things such as going to the supermarket, driving a car, crossing a bridge, or going to a movie? You may hold certain beliefs that help maintain the disorder. These beliefs, the emotional fear, and the physical symptoms feed on each other and ensure that the dreaded cycle will continue. I will teach you cognitive-behavioral methods that have proven effective for panic disorder: breathing retraining, targeting thoughts and beliefs, gaining mastery over the fear of physical symptoms and over fearful situations. You will learn to cope with stress and general anxiety. Your recovery lies within you. Together we will find your strength and you will become empowered and unafraid.

About Albert Doepner

I have been working in the mental health field since 1991. I began as a school psychologist, performing academic and neuropsychological evaluations with children and adolescents suspected of having learning, attentional, and cognitive challenges. I also worked as a Special Education Counselor for twenty years.

Since 2004, I have been working as a therapist with various populations; most recently with service members and families stationed at Fort Hood and Fort Bliss. I have an intense interest in helping couples regain their relational vitality and passion for each other. To overcome relational patterns that have become stagnant. Too often, others have a stake in the survival and revival of the relationship. I am pro-marriage and take my work most seriously. To that end, I have been trained in the Gottman Couples Therapy Method and in the Prepare-Enrich program.

I have also been trained in the use of EMDR, an extensively researched and proven psychotherapy approach for the treatment of trauma. It is an effective treatment for many types of psychological stress.
